Event Details

Hack/Reduce is a free one-day big data hackathon. Developers get free access to a huge Amazon EC2 cluster with up to 500 nodes. The goal is to develop applications that extract interesting information from datasets and combinations of datasets. We mainly use the open source Apache Hadoop project but other technologies can also be used.

Provided:

  1. Free access to Amazon EC2 clusters that can be scaled up according to your needs.
  2. Pre-loaded datasets (participants are encouraged to suggest datasets)
  3. Introduction to Hadoop and Map/Reduce and the infrastrucure
  4. Support from Hadoop and Map/Reduce experts
  5. Food and drinks
At the end of the event, participating teams and developers get to present what they have done, what they learned and what problems they faced.
It's an opportunity to develop something great, learn Hadoop MapReduce and meet people interested in big data development.
More info at hackreduce.org (The first Hack/Reduce was organized in Montreal, check event report here.)

For participants:

  • Think about ideas that you could build
  • Find the datasets you need and send an email about them to Riku at  firstname@hopper.travel
